One 2025 paper, “AI Self-preferencing in Algorithmic Hiring: Empirical Evidence and Insights,” found that large language models used in simulated resume screening tended to prefer resumes generated by themselves over human-written resumes or resumes produced by other models, even when content quality was controlled. The paper reported self-preference bias ranging from 68% to 88% across major commercial and open-source models.

The same paper simulated hiring pipelines across 24 occupations and found that candidates using the same large language model as the evaluator were 23% to 60% more likely to be shortlisted than equally qualified applicants submitting human-written resumes.

That is a big deal.

It does not mean every employer uses these tools. It does not mean every AI-generated resume will perform better. It does not mean job seekers should blindly generate generic AI resumes and send them everywhere.

MIT Sloan covered research finding that job seekers who received algorithmic assistance with their resumes received 7.8% more job offers than those who did not receive that help. The same article notes that many participants were outside the U.S. and were applying in English-language labor markets where English may not have been their native language, so the result should not be treated as a universal guarantee.

Still, the lesson is useful.

Better writing matters.

The risk is using AI badly: producing generic, over-polished, vague resumes that sound impressive but do not say much.
